The short version
Your audio and text never leave your device. Dictaur transcribes speech on your own machine using a local Whisper model. We never receive, store, or transmit your raw audio or your transcripts. You don't need an account to dictate.
The desktop app
- Transcription runs 100% on-device. Audio is captured, processed, and discarded locally.
- The app ships no analytics and no content telemetry — it does not phone home with what you said or typed.
- No account is required to use the free local app.
What touches the network
The app is honest about the few things that legitimately use the internet — none of which include your audio or transcripts:
- Software updates — checking for and downloading new versions.
- The one-time model download — fetching the Whisper model the first time.
- Your account — only if you create one (required for Dictaur Pro, optional otherwise).
- Hosted AI — only if you turn on Dictaur Pro and explicitly invoke an AI action.
Your raw audio is never uploaded.
Dictaur Pro (hosted AI)
Hosted AI is opt-in. When you choose to run an AI action (polish, summarize, translate, chat), the relevant text you asked us to process is sent to our hosted-AI service to fulfill that request, and your subscription is billed via Stripe. If you never enable Pro, none of this applies. You can bring your own API key or local Ollama instead and stay fully local.
This website
dictaur.com uses privacy-respecting, cookieless analytics to measure how the site itself performs (page views and which buttons are clicked). This is the website only — it is completely separate from the desktop app, which ships zero telemetry. Analytics load only after you accept the cookie notice.
Your rights
- Access, correct, delete, or export any account data we hold (GDPR / CCPA).
- Cancel Dictaur Pro anytime; the free local app keeps working regardless.
- Object to or opt out of any processing — most of which simply doesn't exist for local use.
